Theatres and Theatre Festivals in Belarus
In the XVI century the "Batleika" puppet theater appeared; in the XVI–XX centuries gained significance popular drama. In the first half of the XVIII century private theatres worked, some of which reached professional level. An important role in the development of theatrical art in Belarus was played by the work of the playwright, actor and producer V.Dunin–Martsinkevich, who in the middle of the XVIII century began to create Belarusian professional theatre. exampleY.Kupala, Y.Kolas and others. One of the most famous plays, Paulinka (written by YankaKupala), was performed in Siberia for the Belarusians who were being sent to the region. By the middle of the XX century there were 23 professional theatres in Belarus. However, during the Great Patriotic War the majority of them were closed. In the post–war period many theatres were reopened, new ones were established. | |||||
Theater of Musical Comedy | There are about 30 state theatres in Belarus now. Today the country boasts a diverse range of theatre and drama. Puppet theatres can be found in most towns and are really popular with children. Every major town has its own opera house and ballet. The National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, as well as the State Symphonic Concert Orchestra are well known and admired internationally. Belarus is famous for musical comedy, which is held at the popular Theatre of Musical Comedy inMinsk. Drama also plays a central role in the culture of Belarus, with the leading drama theatre being the YankaKupalaBeslarusian State Academic Theater, located in Minsk. The International Student Theatre Festival "TeatralnyKoufar" is held every year in Minsk. The festival’s aim is to popularize student amateur theatre art; to provide a field for young peoples’ creative self-actualization; to establish artistic relations among student theatre groups of Belarus and other countries of the world. Master classes and workshops in various subjects are provided to the participants. They contribute to the mutual enrichment of theatrical, aesthetic ideas in directing, acting, set design, innovations in student theatrical creativity. The international independent jury consists of leading theatrical figures, tutors, | |||||
directors and critics from such countries as Lithuania, Bulgaria, Belarus, Turkey, Philippines, Germany, Russia, Mexico, and Estonia. They award the prizes to the best female and male performer, the best supporting female and male performer, to the best directing and scenic design. All the participants of the Festival are awarded with diplomas and valuable presents. | |||||
The International Theatre Festival "WhiteTower" (Belaya Vezha) has been held since 1996 year in Brest. The first festival gathered theatres from 6 countries and gave an opportunity to the theatres of the former USSR to meet together, as well as acquaint Belarusian audience with some foreign theatrical groups. During 14 years of the festival history the representatives of 51 countries participated in the Festival and gave a huge number of plays. The 8-days festivalprogramcontains | |||||
