THEATRE IN THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS
The tradition of Belarusian theatre is very ancient. It started in the early middle ages as folk puppet theatres - Batlejka - and folk drama. In general all of the traditional Belarusian celebrations and games have a theatrical element. Later this tradition was refined in a Renaissance Belarus which was at that time the cultural center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The art of ballet became known in Belarus in the second half of the 18th century. The richest Belarusian and Polish feudal lords such as theRadzivills, Oginskis, Sapiegas had drama theatres, choirs and ballet schools at their palaces. For example at the height of its flourishing the Slonim Opera and Ballet Private Theatre of Oginski aristocratic family had 300 performers! Though that tradition died out in the 19th century the development of the theatrical art did not stop. Today there are more than 30state theatres in Belarus. The most well-know theatres inMinsk are the National Academic Theatre of JankaKupala, the National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the State Russian Drama Theatre and the Theatre of Musical Comedy. The theatrical season in Belarus continues all the year round. In summer the Belarusian theatres make performance tours, while the audience enjoys the art of guest theatres. | |||
YankaKupala National Academic Theatre YankaKupala National Theatre is a real pride of our people. It is the oldest theatre in Belarus. It was opened on the 14th of September, 1920. The first play performed on the stage of the theatre was Kupala’s “Pavlinka”. | |||
In general, the first performances were based on the Belarusian folklore and works by Belarusian writers but then foreign works started to be produced on the stage. Nowadays YankaKupala National Academic Theatre presents lots of plays, written by such authors as Shakespeare, B. Shaw, Gogol, Dostoevsky, V. Bykov. | |||
The National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus The State Opera House, the first in the history of Belarus, was opened in Minsk in 1933. The first performance in the new theatre building was "The Swan Lake". Today this theatre suggests a remarkable choice of unforgettable operas and ballets: "Boris Godunov", "Othello", "Sadko";"Nutcracker", "Sleeping Beauty", "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai", "Firebird", "Chipollino" and many others. | |||

Bolshoi Ballet Theatre of BelarusianRepublic since 1973.It should be mentioned, that in 1996 the State Theater was divided in two independent theaters: the National Academic Bolshoi Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus and the National Academic Opera Theatre of Belarus. The National Academic Drama Theater named after Gorky began its functioning as the Regional Drama Theater in 1928 inMogilev. In 1932 the theatre received the status of the Russian Republican Drama Theater. In Minsk the theater began working in 1947. In 1973 the theater was headed by a young talented director Boris Lutzenko. The modern period of the theater is characterized by the constant enrichment of the repertoire by the classical masterpieces. | |||
