CONTROL ZONES / CONTROL AREAS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Around many provincial airfields there will be an area of protected airspace where special air traffic control requirements apply. Details for each airfield are published in the Aeronautical Information Publication and the appropriate charts can be obtained from the Civil Aviation Authority.

The usual arrangement for such airspace at civil airfields consists of Control Zones and Control Areas.

The Zone extends from ground level (referred to as the ‘surface’) up to a specified (a) _______ limit, for example, Flight Level 65 (approximately 6,500 ft). The zone is cylindrical in shape, with its axis at the centre of the airfield, and is typically 10 n.m. in diameter. The effect is to prohibit any flights below FL 65 flying (b) _______ than 5 n.m. to the airfield unless authorized by Air Traffic Control. At the same time, a (c) _______ area of regulated airspace extends beyond the zone, and this is known as the Control Area. The (d) _______ limit is the same as the zone (FL 65 in this example) but the (e) _______ limit is perhaps 1,500 ft altitude (i.e. above sea level). The Control Area may be oval in shape, around 20 n.m. at its (f) _______ point, 10 n.m. across at its (g) _______ (the same as the zone). The (h) _______ axis of the oval shape coincides with the airfield runway headings, and therefore provides a protected region of airspace to landing and departing aircraft.

Flights may, of course, route alongside the zone, and below the Control Area, without infringing Regulated Airspace.
